Riley Takes Second: Justin Riley, a Grinnell (Iowa) College freshman from Lawrence, finished second in the Midwest Conference cross country championships last Saturday in Green Bay, Wis. Riley (26:15) finished less than a minute behind junior teammate Adam Booth (25:17), who won the individual title. Grinnell also won the team title.

Williams 10th in ACC: Chris Williams, a Duke University junior from Lawrence, placed 10th in the ACC men’s cross country championships on Saturday in Atlanta. Williams covered the 8K course in 24:54 and helped the Blue Devils finish in second place overall.

Gremminger Ace: Jesse Gremminger, a former Kansas University baseball player, used a nine-iron to notch a hole-in-one last Monday on the 140-yard No. 17 hole at Eagle Bend Golf Course. Brandon Smith was the witness.

Boeck, Johnson Winners: Lawrence’s Dee Boeck and Dane Johnson earned age-group titles in last Saturday’s Humana River Crown Plaza half-marathon in Kansas City, Mo. Lawrence’s Celeste Leonardi earned an age-group second place, Philip Dizerega a third, Michael Johnson a fourth and Scott Coston, Carol McFall and Kami Day fifths. In the 5K, Lawrence’s John Roth won his age group. Paul Bowlin, Brian McFall and Kenneth Johnson earned age-group thirds.

Eight-Ball Regional: More than 350 participants are expected for the APA Eight-Ball Kansas Regional this weekend at the Pool Room, 9th and Iowa. Competition will begin at 7 p.m. Friday and continue all day Saturday and Sunday. Finals are scheduled for 9 p.m. Sunday.
