Pedestrian struck by car listed in fair condition

A Topeka woman who was struck Wednesday morning by a pickup truck in downtown Lawrence was listed in fair condition Wednesday night at KU Med in Kansas City, Kan.

Janice K. Curtis, 57, suffered a head injury in the accident, which occurred about 9:49 a.m. at Seventh and New Hampshire streets, said Lawrence Police Sgt. Mike Pattrick.

Curtis was crossing Seventh Street, going north, when she was struck by a 1979 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Margeret L. Todd, 30, of Lawrence, Pattrick said. Todd was traveling south on New Hampshire and was making a left turn.

Curtis was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was later taken by air ambulance to KU Med, Pattrick said.

He said no citations were issued, pending investigation of the accident.

“We are investigating that alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident,” Pattrick said.

He also said Todd was arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant.

Hearing rescheduled in capital murder case

A preliminary hearing for a man charged with capital murder originally scheduled for next Thursday in Douglas County District Court has been continued.

Damien C. Lewis, 22, now is scheduled to have his preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. Dec. 12 before Judge Michael Malone.

Lewis faces several charges in the July 10 shooting deaths of George “Pete” Wallace and Wyona Chandlee. The two 71-year-olds were killed in their eastern Lawrence home. If Lewis is found guilty, he could be sentenced to death.

Lewis is represented by the Kansas Capital Murder Defense Unit. Attorneys have been busy with a capital murder trial in Wichita involving brothers Reginald and Jonathan Carr.
