Knicks earn first win

Kings drop third straight for first time in two years

? Lee Nailon gave the Knicks exactly what they missed during an 0-4 start a second offensive option in crunch time.

Nailon scored 10 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter Wednesday night as New York beat Sacramento, 95-88, handing the Kings their first three-game losing streak in two seasons.

“The last two or three games our fourth quarters had been bad. I wanted to step up and let everyone know that we can win games,” Nailon said. “We’ve been in games, but have not put together a fourth quarter.”

That streak of late failures came to an end thanks to Nailon, who was signed after being released by the New Orleans Hornets late in the preseason.

A starter in 41 games for the Hornets when Jamal Mashburn was injured last season, Nailon was cut following an argument with Hornets coach Paul Silas during an exhibition game against Atlanta.

“Management had to make a decision. We had a lot of small forwards, and guys that tried to get traded couldn’t get traded,” Nailon said. “I’m glad that I’m here, not there, because I’d be fighting for minutes and probably wouldn’t be playing right now.”

Allan Houston scored 21 and Charlie Ward and Shandon Anderson added 15 each for the Knicks, who had six players in double figures.

Chris Webber scored 22 and Peja Stojakovic 19 for the Kings, playing their fourth road game in five nights.

New York's Lee Nailon (54) keeps the ball from Sacramento's Scot Pollard, from Kansas University, during their game at Madison Square Garden. Nailon scored 20 points as the Knicks won, 95-88, handing the Kings their first three-game losing streak in two seasons.

“We got beat by a better team tonight,” Webber said. “That’s as far as it goes, and it doesn’t lead into how good we’ll be all year. They played well. They deserved it.”

Without anyone other than Houston to rely on late in games, the Knicks had been outscored by a combined 125-72 in their four fourth quarters. But Nailon provided what had been missing, scoring New York’s first six points of the fourth quarter and 10 of its first 12.

The only Knicks basket by anyone else during that stretch was a powerful breakaway dunk by Shandon Anderson over the outstretched arm of Gerald Wallace.

“I had a glimpse of who was coming to get it. Either he was going to block it or I was going to get him,” Anderson said.

The dunk fired up the crowd and led Sacramento coach Rick Adelman to call timeout with his team trailing 82-76. Anderson failed to convert a three-point play after the dunk, but Nailon kept the momentum on New York’s side by hitting a corner jumper and a baseline drive to make it 86-77.

Houston scored between a pair of turnovers by Bobby Jackson, and a corner jumper by Houston made it 90-77 with 3:53 left.

Sacramento scored the next eight points before the Knicks got a break as the shot clock was mistakenly reset after Kurt Thomas had consecutive shots rejected.

The extra time allowed the Knicks to run 45 seconds off the clock, and Thomas was credited with a field goal when Webber goaltended his shot with 1:01 left, making it 92-85.

The Kings’ final chance ended when Stojakovic missed a reverse layup with 15 seconds left with a chance to cut the Knicks’ lead to three.

76ers 101, Clippers 99, OT

Philadelphia Allen Iverson scored six of his 34 points in overtime to lead Philadelphia. The Sixers have won three straight since losing their opener. The Clippers have dropped three of four. Los Angeles had a chance to win in the final seconds, but Elton Brand missed a short turnaround and Michael Olowokandi missed the tip-in. Iverson grabbed the rebound and sealed it with a free throw. Todd MacCulloch had 15 points and eight rebounds. Aaron McKie added 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Philadelphia. Brand had 21 points and 19 rebounds, and Olowokandi added 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Clippers.

Starting center Jelani McCoy also didn’t play after the first quarter because of backs spasms.

Wizards 107, Cavs 100

Washington Jerry Stackhouse scored 35 points, and Washington never trailed in snapping a two-game losing skid with a victory against Cleveland. Stackhouse shot 9-of-16 from the field and 15-of-17 from the line. He scored eight straight points in a game-opening 19-3 run, and his hustle and energy helped rebuild the lead after the Cavaliers cut it to three at halftime. Michael Jordan was 0-for-4 from the field entering the fourth quarter, but he avoided the first scoreless game of his career with a jumper and an acrobatic move for a layup down the stretch. He finished with six points in 24 minutes. Ricky Davis scored 27 points to lead the Cavaliers, who were coming off a home victory against the Los Angeles Lakers the night before.

Bucks 99, Nets 93

Milwaukee Ray Allen scored 29 points and Toni Kukoc added 26 as Milwaukee sent New Jersey to its first loss of the season. The defending Eastern Conference champions were trying to start 5-0 for the first time in franchise history. They also opened 4-0 in 1997-98. But the Nets couldn’t stop Milwaukee’s outside shooting. The Bucks shot 9-of-13 from three-point range through the first three quarters in building a 75-67 lead, then knocked down three more early in the fourth to pull away. Milwaukee made 12 of 20 three-pointers in all. Jason Kidd paced New Jersey with 24 points and four other players finished in double figures. But Richard Jefferson, averaging a team-high 17.3 points, was held to just one.

Celtics 91, Bulls 69

Chicago Antoine Walker scored a season-high 22 points, and Paul Pierce added 17 as Boston routed Chicago. Eric Williams had 12 points and Shammond Williams 11 for the Celtics, who led the entire way as they got payback for last week’s season-opening loss to Chicago. The Eastern Conference finalists have now won two after losing their first two. The Bulls shot just under 30 percent. They also had 20 turnovers twice as many as the Celtics with five by rookie Jay Williams.

Hornets 86, Sonics 84

New Orleans Baron Davis had 23 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists as New Orleans handed Seattle its first loss. David Wesley added 19 points for New Orleans, including four three-pointers. Jamal Mashburn scored 16 for the Hornets (3-1), who have won all three games in their new home. Davis got the best of his showdown with fellow All-Star guard Gary Payton, who had 29 points and nine assists for the SuperSonics (4-1). Rashard Lewis scored 21 for Seattle.

Pistons 80, Jazz 78

Salt Lake City Jon Barry hit a three-pointer with 22.3 seconds left as Detroit rallied to beat Utah. Richard Hamilton had 28 points and Clifford Robinson scored a season-high 16 for the Pistons, who won when Mark Jackson’s tying attempt from the top of the key just before the buzzer was way off. Ben Wallace had 15 rebounds and nine points as the Pistons improved to 3-0 on a five-game road trip and sent the Jazz to their second 1-4 start in as many seasons.

Suns 93, Hawks 88

Phoenix Penny Hardaway scored 16 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, helping Phoenix rally from a 14-point deficit to beat Atlanta. Hardaway, given his first start of the season in an attempt to get more early scoring, made his first five shots in the final period including three three-pointers. Shawn Marion had 26 points and nine rebounds to help snap Atlanta’s three-game winning streak. Jason Terry had 22 points and eight assists for the Hawks, and Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 19.

Trail Blazers 94, Grizzlies 88

Portland, Ore. Rasheed Wallace had 18 points and eight rebounds as Portland overcame a spate of injuries. The Grizzlies (0-5) are the NBA’s only winless team. Scottie Pippen, who came in off the bench when Derek Anderson was injured in the first quarter, added 16 points for the Blazers. Dale Davis had 10 points and 13 rebounds. Pau Gasol, last season’s Rookie of the Year, led all scorers with 23 points for the Grizzlies. Jason Williams had 19 points and 11 assists. Gasol led all scorers with 17 points at the half.
