A Lawrence man facing a federal drug charge was arrested Tuesday after allegedly shooting a woman who was to testify against him, Lawrence Police said.

Antonio E. Floyd Jr., 19, was charged in Douglas County District Court with attempted first-degree murder, sexual battery and criminal possession of a firearm.

The woman, 31, also of Lawrence, was reported in serious condition Tuesday night at an area hospital. She was shot three times in the head and chest, according to police reports and court documents.

The woman called police about 2:30 a.m., reporting that she had been shot in her home on Haskell Avenue, Lawrence Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Pattrick said. The woman’s assailant also attempted to sexually assault her.

When officers arrived, the woman was able to identify the man who shot her. Less than 10 minutes later, officers stopped a car the suspect was driving near 24th Street and Ousdahl Road, Pattrick said.

“We were able to recover a .32-caliber handgun and some ammunition,” he said.

“We have probable cause to believe the shooting was motivated by the fact that she is a witness in a drug case that he is a suspect in,” Pattrick said.

Neither Pattrick nor federal court officials would confirm that the woman was a witness in the federal case against Floyd. Police were withholding the victim’s name because of the alleged sexual assault; her location was withheld because of concerns about her safety.

Floyd was indicted Sept. 11 in U.S. District Court in Topeka on one count of possession with intent to distribute 50 or more grams of cocaine. He had been free on his own recognizance.

No details were available about the case, but a trial had been scheduled for Dec. 2 before Judge Julie Robinson.

Floyd also had prior Douglas County warrants for his arrest on an incident that allegedly occurred July 11. He is charged with criminal damage to property, battery and criminal possession of a firearm.

The criminal damage charge alleges Floyd fired gunshots into a car belonging to a woman who also was the alleged victim in the battery charge, according to court documents.

Floyd was being held in Douglas County Jail on $250,000 bond. He is to appear in Douglas County District Court again today to have an attorney appointed to represent him and to set a preliminary hearing date.

The woman’s son, a boy who is a second-grader at East Heights School, was sleeping in the house when the shooting occurred but was not injured, police said. The East Heights Crisis Response Team was activated, school officials said.

“In this case we responded to each classroom and spoke with children and teachers about the situation,” said Jeanette DeVilbiss, a crisis team member. “Our principal has assured us there was no danger to the students.”
