Area State Football Previews: Baldwin-Eudora an instant classic

Expect another classic.

That’s all that needs to be said about Baldwin High-Eudora High, Round II.

The first-round Class 4A football playoff game at 7 tonight at Laws Field in Eudora has all the makings of a great game, judging by the last time the two teams met.

“It wouldn’t surprise me at all,” Bulldogs coach Mike Berg said. “It’s going to be a line ’em up, knock ’em down, smash-mouth football game. Whichever team comes in and eliminates their mistakes will probably win.”

When the Bulldogs handed the Cardinals their only loss of the season back on Oct. 11, it came off a last-minute, 74-yard touchdown pass from Jason Kesinger to Brian Lauridson.

Eudora (8-1) is ready for Baldwin (6-3).

“They did some things that we weren’t ready for in that first game,” Cardinals coach Gregg Webb said. “We’ll have a better grasp of what they’re trying to do this time around.”

Webb said his defense had made improvements the last three weeks after trouncing DeSoto, shutting down Huron League champ KC Ward and handling previously unbeaten Mill Valley in the regular-season finale. He hopes those improvements carry over, because it was defense that hurt the Cardinals last time.

Baldwin, which qualified for the playoffs by beating Santa Fe Trail and Perry-Lecompton to offset a loss to Topeka Hayden, should be ready for its Frontier League rival, even if starting fullback Lauridson is banged up.

“It’ll be a game-time decision,” Berg said. “He’s such a big factor for us, but if he can’t go, we’ll have somebody ready to step in for him.”
