7-year-old hospitalized after dog attack

A 7-year-old boy was in fair condition Sunday night at a Kansas City, Mo., hospital, where he was taken by air ambulance after being attacked by a neighbor’s Rottweiler.

Tanner Marroquin sustained injuries to his shoulder and upper arm before his father pulled the dog away, Lawrence Police said.

The names of the child’s parents were not available.

The attack occurred near dusk in the back yard of 1604 W. 21st Terrace, where Tanner apparently had gone to retrieve his own puppy.

“Tanner’s dog had jumped the fence a number of times to probably play with the other dogs,” Sgt. Dave Hubbel said.

The neighbors knew Tanner was in the back yard but didn’t think anything of it until they heard a commotion, Hubbel said. Then they saw Tanner on the ground with the Rottweiler on top of him.

“I don’t know what made it bite the boy,” Hubbel said. “It’s hard to say.”

An ambulance took Tanner to Schwegler School, 2201 Ousdahl Road, where a helicopter landed and took him to Children’s Mercy Hospital.

Police would not release the name of the dog’s owner, who keeps his dog at 1604 W. 21st Terrace but lives elsewhere. He told police he adopted it from the Lawrence Humane Society and had owned it for about six months.

No citations were issued Sunday, police said, but an investigation was under way.

The 8-year-old Rottweiler had no history of violence, Hubbel said.

However, one neighbor, Toni Detherage, said she had observed the dog behaving aggressively in the past.

The Rottweiler was left in the care of the owner, who plans to have it tested for rabies today, Hubbel said.

Other neighbors at the scene Sunday evening said they weren’t well-acquainted with Tanner’s family or the owner of the dog.
