Mavericks’ LaFrentz injures right ankle

Dallas Raef LaFrentz heard a pop in his right ankle when he landed hard in the third quarter of the Dallas Mavericks’ 97-83 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Saturday night.

The team called it a sprain, but LaFrentz feared worse as he left the locker room on crutches. He’s scheduled to have an MRI today.

“Hopefully I didn’t rupture it,” the Kansas University product said.

LaFrentz was defending a move under the basket by Suns center Jake Tsakalidis. LaFrentz jumped and hit Tsakalidis at the same time teammate Shawn Bradley hit him. When LaFrentz landed, it was obvious he was in pain.

Center Evan Eschmeyer helped him to the locker room.
