Jayhawks top No. 24 Longhorns, 3-0

It was easily the most fun the Kansas University volleyball team has had in some time.

The Jayhawks, in one of their most complete matches this season, swept No. 24 Texas 3-0 (33-31, 30-26, 30-19) in front of a deafening crowd of 1,164 on Saturday at Horejsi Center.

It was the second time this season KU has topped a ranked team, but Saturday’s shocker was a bit more convincing than a 3-2 victory on Sept. 25 against No. 23 Colorado.

“It seemed liked there for awhile we lost that intensity and that fun,” sophomore Ashley Michaels said. “Tonight, we brought it all back.”

After coming away with nail-biting victories in the first two games against the Longhorns, Kansas dominated game three from the start. The Jayhawks (17-5 overall, 8-5 Big 12 Conference) grabbed four of the first five points, then later went on a crowd-shaking 11-0 run to go up 19-4 and never look back.

“That’s one of those things,” Kansas coach Ray Bechard said. “Things started snowballing and the momentum started changing.”

Michaels and freshman Andi Rozum were clutch on the front line during the final game. The two combined to block six Longhorn attacks in game three, all resulting in points.

Four of the denials came on attempted kills by Texas standout Mira Topic. The 6-foot-2 Croatia native had 12 kills in the first game, but had just eight the rest of the way.

“It was their very best hitter,” Bechard said. “And we clamped on her a little bit with the block.”

Josiane Lima (17 kills, 10 digs) and Sarah Rome (14-11) each had a double-double for the surging Jayhawks, winners of three straight Big 12 matches.

The Longhorns (18-5, 9-4) topped Kansas 3-0 on Oct. 5, but revenge was in order Saturday. When all was said and done, it was quite unclear which was the ranked squad.

“The difference tonight was they won that first game down there 33-31, and we won it here,” Bechard said. “I thought that was a big boost.”

Kansas travels to Lubbock, Texas, to take on Texas Tech on Wednesday. If the same KU team that showed up Saturday shows up against the Lady Raiders, it could turn into quite a Big 12 shoot-out.

“It was a great effort,” Bechard said. “A great effort against a very, very good team.”
