Faces and places

The Kansas Association of Broadcasters recently had its annual meeting. Gary Hawke, KJHK/KUJH-TV, Lawrence, serves on the association’s board of directors. Hank Booth’s term on the board will end Dec. 31. Booth works for KLWN/KLZR in Lawrence.

Keith Dabney, an employee of the Douglas County Zoning and Codes Department, completed the Emergency Management Institute’s managing floodplain development course.

Dale Willey Automotive, Lawrence, has added Cindy Hoover and Don Scott to its sales staff as sales and leasing consultants. Hoover is a graduate of Lawrence High School and attended Kansas University. Scott joins the company after working six years in automotive sales for another Lawrence dealership. He also served as the packaging warehouse supervisor at Quaker Oats.

Paul Johnson, Perry, has been named to the Kansas Center for Sustainable Agriculture and Alternative Crops advisory committee.

KCSAAC works to support family farms in Kansas. The center assists farmers by coordinating research and educational programs and by responding to questions about agricultural practices and products throughout the state.

The advisory committee, which is made up of 11 farmers and farm organization representatives, provides long-term direction for the center. The majority of members are producers.

Johnson raises lambs, vegetables and small fruits on his farm northwest of Lawrence in Jefferson County.

Harold Pearce, a Raymond James Financial Services Inc. financial adviser in Lawrence, attended the company’s national conference for professional development in Nashville, Tenn. He is a member of the President’s Council, a group composed of some of the firm’s most successful financial advisers. Pearce was recognized for his achievement during the conference, which was Oct. 13-17.

Several Lawrence optometrists attended the 2002 Kansas Optometric Association Fall Eyecare conference in Wichita. Those who attended included Curtis Anderson, Brent Crandon, Elizabeth Crandon, Kent Dobbins, Steven Flory, Charles Pohl, Arthur Queen, Kevin Trummel and Darrel Smith.

Vicki Downs is the new aquatics director at Neu Physical Therapy Center, Lawrence. She has been involved with water aerobics for five years. Downs was trained in all areas of water aerobics, which include: high/low intensity and arthritis classes. She has taught aqua aerobics for three years.

Deanna Dibble of RE/MAX Professionals in Lawrence, attended the annual RE/MAX Midstates Convention. She attended several seminars including “Client Bonding,” “Customer Service at the Speed of Light” and “Listing the Future.”

Walt Hull, Lawrence, recently participated in Repair Days at the National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis, Tenn. The museum’s primary goal is to support the art of metalsmithing.

Hull was among 75 volunteers who spent an October weekend repairing a variety of items ranging from jewelry to lawn furniture to driveway gates. Hull owns Walt Hull Iron Work, Lawrence.

Neal Lintecum, a Lawrence orthopedic surgeon, was inducted as a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand at its annual meeting Oct. 4 in Phoenix. To be eligible for admission to the society, the physician must be certified, have completed a Hand Fellowship, have a certificate of added qualifications in surgery of hand, and have made contributions to the practice of hand surgery. Lintecum practices with Lawrence Orthopaedic Surgery, Sixth and Maine streets. He has special privileges at Lawrence Surgery Center and Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Honors and awards

Bob Runion, Topeka, has been named a recipient of the 2002 Adecco Contemporary Temporary Award. Adecco, the nation’s largest staffing service company, created the award to recognize temporary workers who excel in their occupations. Adecco’s Topeka, Lawrence and Wichita offices are owned and operated by Lawrence resident Shirley Martin-Smith.

Lawrence lawyers John W. Brand Jr., Webster L. Golden and Peter K. Curran of the firm of Stevens & Brand L.L.P., Lawrence, are to be included in the 2003-2004 edition of The Best Lawyers in America.

Best Lawyers is based on a peer-review survey in which attorneys throughout the country rate practitioners on their legal abilities in their specialties. Fewer than 3 percent of all attorneys in the country were selected for this honor. In Kansas, 212 attorneys were selected.

KANU of Lawrence was named noncommercial radio station of the year by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters during a convention in Wichita.

KANU also received awards in the following categories: station promotion announcement, first and second; single topic event news coverage, second; in-depth news reporting, first; and editorial/commentary, first.

KJHK, Lawrence, received honorable mention in the public affairs program and first place in sports play-by-play.

KLZR, Lawrence, earned first place in station promotion announcement and second place in the complete sportscast. It also received third place in editorial/commentary.

KLWN, Lawrence, won first place in the complete newscast category.

GLPM Architects, Lawrence, received two awards from the Kansas chapter of the American Institute of Architects during its annual honors program. GLPM Architects earned an Honor Award for Excellence in Architecture for the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H. The company also received a Citation for Excellence in Architecture for Memorial Stadium enhancements at Kansas University.

The Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing was recognized for the quality of its promotional materials at the annual conference of the Southern Economic Development Council that was Sept. 21-24 in Birmingham, Ala.

The department won a special judges award for the Kansas Data Book, which provides an overview of the state’s business environment and the resources and incentives available to new and expanding companies. The agency also received two merit awards. It received one for “Developing Kansas Winter 2001,” which recognized the department’s quarterly newsletter, and another for a magazine/advertorial titled, “Kansas Ratings 2002.”

The department developed the promotional materials to increase awareness and attract new business investment to Kansas. Entries were judged on graphic appeal, clarity and appropriateness of message, positioning, and differentiation and content.

Sherry Girty, an employee of Haskell Indian Nations University, has been named for inclusion to the International Who’s Who of Business Professional Management of 2002. She is a member of The Lawrence Alliance, Haskell liaison member of Lawrence Human Relations & Human Resources and member of the Pelathe Resource Center’s Technology committee.

Coming events

Consumer Credit Counseling will present “Discover More Dollars” from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the United Way, 2518 Ridge Court. The workshop will cover financial goal setting, developing a realistic budget, cutting costs, evaluating spending habits and starting a savings plan.

Gayle Sanders, president of MartinLogan, will be the guest speaker at a breakfast seminar for Kansas International.
