WAMEGO ? Baldwin High pulled a first, sweeping the boys’ and girls’ Class 4A titles on Saturday at the state cross country meet. It was the fifth straight title for the boys, but the first title for the girls.

“We’d gotten a lot of seconds and third, but had never gotten over the hump,” Bulldogs coach Mike Spielman said. “I was really impressed with the way they handled the whole thing with being the No. 1 ranked team and all that.”

It helped that the girls had two runners in the top 10, junior Erica Ogle (4) and freshman Denise Orloff (7). With three other runners in the top 33, Baldwin easily bested second place Wamego by 45 points.

The girls had two studs at the top, but the boys won by placing all seven runners in the top 34. Phil Wagner was the top finisher (13), followed by Keith Cowart (22) and Zac Towns (23).

Tonganoxie’s boys finished third, paced by Kyle Norris (5) and Tony Aligo (10), and Mill Valley was eighth. Junior Jay Matlack, who won last week’s regional at Tongie, was seventh.

l Ottawa junior Lisa Morrissey was sixth overall in the girls’ 4A race, the third time she’s been an all-state runner. She ran 12:21 for the two-mile course.

l Wellsville was 10th in both the 3A boys’ and girls’ races. Chad Roecker (49) was the top boys runner, and Libby Fouts (39) led the girls’ squad.

l The McLouth girls’ squad was ninth in the 2-1A race, paced by senior Courtney Edmonds (26). The boys’ lone runner, Matt Scarlett, was 20th, good for an all-state finish.

l Seabury Academy’s Katie Pottorff was 55th in the Seahawks’ first-ever appearance at state, running the two-mile course in 13:57.
