George Lee Hughes

He was born Jan. 1, 1936, in Bancroft, the son of George and Anna Pauline (Denning) Hughes. He attended Bancroft Grade School and Wetmore High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in business in 1958 and a master's degree in school administration in 1964, both from Emporia State University.

Mr. Hughes owned and operated Hughes Tax Service for 45 years and farmed part time from 1958 to 2002 in the Goff and Soldier communities.

He taught at Havensville Grade School, Soldier Grade School, Highland Community College, Kickapoo Nation School and Capital City High School, and was principal in Soldier, Havensville, Natoma and Overbrook. In the summers he worked for the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service. He also was a U.S. Census taker and co-owner of Sunflower Supports Co.

He was a member of Pi Omega Pi honorary business fraternity, Phi Delta Kappa honorary administrators fraternity and Tau Kappa Epsilon, all at Emporia State. He was also a member of National Association of Elementary Principals, Kansas Association of Elementary Principals, Cheyenne Conference, Topeka Post Polio Support Group and Golden Spokes Antique Car Club.

He was a life member of National Education Assn., president and vice president of Pottawatomie County Teachers Assn., president of Principals Assn., and served as Republican Township committeeman, 4-H community leader and softball coach.

Mr. Hughes married Lena Lou Rogers in 1957 in Wetmore. They later divorced. He married MaryAnn Channel on Feb. 18, 1983, in Hiawatha. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include three sons, Kevin, Lawrence, Robert, Overland Park, and George "Jim," Topeka; a daughter, M. Leann Dickson, Lawrence; and eight grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, Topeka, where a parish rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Sunday.
