Heartland Park for sale
Topeka ? With debts reportedly totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars, the corporation that operates the city-owned Heartland Park Topeka is trying to sell its motorsports business.
Topeka Mayor Butch Felker remains convinced the 13-year-old track, site of an annual National Hot Rod Association weekend event that draws about 100,000 people, has a solid future.
Late last week, Peter Clifford, spokesman for the NHRA, said the organization remains committed to racing in Topeka on May 22-25, 2003.
Consisting of a quarter-mile drag strip, a three-eighths-mile dirt track and a 2.5-mile road course, Heartland Park was built in 1988 for about $22 million, including $7.5 million in voter-approved general obligation bonds.
