Cameron to race in both events

? The NASCAR Winston Cup-Indianapolis 500 doubleheader might be the toughest in all of motorsports.

Then again, to hear Austin Cameron tell it, no same-day auto racing twinbill is easy.

“It’s not exactly the Indy-to-Charlotte deal, but it’s still pretty demanding,” said Cameron, the 25-year-old who is leading the NASCAR Winston West Series division and will attempt a double this weekend at Kansas Speedway.

Cameron, a native of El Cajon, Calif., will drive the Tom Coleman-owned TWC Motorsport Chevrolet entry in Saturday’s NASCAR Winston West Series KansasSpeedway.com 150 at noon and, two hours later, in the ARCA RE/MAX Series BPU 200.

But first comes today’s qualifying.

Gates open at 8 this morning. Winston West Series practice will run 9:30-11 a.m. today, with ARCA RE/MAX practice to follow from 11 a.m-12:30 p.m.

Winston West Bud Pole Qualifying will be at 1:30 p.m. today, with the BPU 200 Old Milwaukee Beer Pole Qualifying to follow at 2:30.

The 100-lap Winston West Series race will start at noon Saturday, with the 134-lap BPU 200 slated to start at 2 p.m.

“We’re going into these races planning on doing everything we can to win them, but we are laying out a base for 2003 as well,” said Coleman, who has a 15-year winning history as a car owner in motorsports. “ARCA has become a testing ground for all major NASCAR Winston Cup teams, and that is the way we are approaching this season.

“From a competitive standpoint, this is an important race for us. From a standpoint of where we will be next season, this is an important race for us. From a sponsorship standpoint, this is an important race for us.”

TWC Motorsport is in discussions with several potential corporate sponsors, Coleman said, and plans to run in NASCAR’s Winston Cup Series beginning next season.

“Austin is a tremendous talent, and we’re anxious to showcase what he can do,” Coleman said. “Watching him go back and forth this weekend, running the Winston West race and then running our car in the ARCA race, is going to be something to see. It’s tough enough to run both races, but to run both races and be as competitive as he can be is going to be exciting.”

Cameron ran both events last season, finishing sixth in the headline ARCA BPU 200 and fifth in the NASCAR Winston West Series race.

“It’s different,” said Cameron. “I’ve run like a late model race on the same day as a Winston West, or a Southwest Tour and Winston West race on the same day, but this is a different deal. Both of these are Winston Cup-type cars and with some pretty stout competition.”

Others who plan to race double-duty are Frank Kimmel, the 2001 ARCA RE/MAX Series champion, and Sikeston, Mo., native Sammy Potashnic.
