County appoints new planning commissioner

Dennis Lawson, a leader in agribusiness and resident of rural Vinland, was appointed Wednesday night to the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission.

Lawson, who works for Farm Credit Services, was appointed to a three-year term by Jere McElhaney, chairman of the Douglas County Commission. Lawson takes over for Jacob Plants, a 72-year-old farmer who ended his term Wednesday night.

McElhaney’s fellow county commissioners applauded McElhaney’s choice.

“He’s very connected, and lives in the agricultural community,” Commissioner Bob Johnson said.

Added Commissioner Charles Jones: “It’s important to maintain some sort of agricultural voice on the planning commission.”

McElhaney also reappointed Tom Jennings, president of Bud Jennings Carpet One, to the planning commission. Jennings also received a three-year term.
