PackerWare’s history dates to late 1960s

Berry Plastics’ proposed sale represents the latest change for Lawrence’s PackerWare Corp. Here’s a quick look at its history:

1968 Jim Schwartzburg founds the company and names it Packer Plastics, after the 1967 NFL champion Green Bay Packers. Its first major job was making containers for whipped topping.

Early 1970s The company expands into the promotional drink cup market. It started by persuading Kansas University and the University of Florida, Schwartzburg’s alma mater, to use the cups in their football stadiums.

1983 Imperial Plastics of Evansville, Ind., is purchased and the name changes to Berry Plastics.

1990 Berry Plastics is purchased by First Atlantic Capital Ltd. of New York.

1995 Packer Plastics changes its name to PackerWare as it enters the retail market by producing plastic houseware items such as plates and pitchers.

1997 Schwartzburg sells PackerWare to Berry Plastics.

March 2002 Berry says it is seeking buyers for the company.

May 2002 Berry announces a deal has been reached to sell the company to a private equity investment fund managed by New York-based Goldman, Sachs & Co.
