National League Roundup: Giants bounce back

San Francisco snaps skid, 7-3, against Arizona

? When catcher Benito Santiago landed on second base for the third time Monday, he smiled and pointed toward the Giants’ dugout. Manager Dusty Baker pointed back.

Not bad for a 37-year-old catcher.

Santiago had three doubles and drove in four runs, Reggie Sanders had a two-run homer and Barry Bonds added a solo shot as the Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 7-3.

“I just pointed to Dusty and the whole group to say, ‘See? We’re doing great,'” Santiago said.

The Giants, swept by the Colorado Rockies in the thin air of Denver over the weekend, snapped their three-game losing streak. With the win, they closed to within 112 games on the defending World Series champion Diamondbacks in the NL West.

Santiago went 3-for-4, extending his hitting streak to 12 games. He is batting .420 during the run. His three doubles matches a franchise record, last reached by fellow catcher Doug Mirabelli on June 24, 2000.

The hometown fans were clearly glad to have the Giants back from their recent disappointing 1-4 road trip, where their lone victory came in Arizona for a two-game split against the Diamondbacks. The game attracted 42,005, the largest crowd ever at Pacific Bell Park.

Bonds treated them with another homer, his 585th, putting him one behind Frank Robinson for fourth all-time.

Bonds, who set the single-season record last year with 73, homered to the left-field bleachers in the fifth inning off Brian Anderson (0-3).

Bonds has 18 home runs this season to match Chicago’s Sammy Sosa for the major-league lead. The reigning NL MVP has homered in six of his last 10 games.

Livan Hernandez (5-4), who opened the season with four straight wins before losing his next four decisions, allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings. He struck out seven.

Dodgers 5, Brewers 3

Los Angeles Shawn Green brought his power stroke back to Dodger Stadium, hitting his 10th home run in seven games to lead Los Angeles past Milwaukee. After going 16-for-27 with nine homers including a record-tying four in one game against Milwaukee and 17 RBIs on a six-game road trip, Green went 1-for-5 with his 13th homer of the year. Hideo Nomo (5-5) allowed two runs, seven hits and seven walks in seven innings.

Cardinals 4, Astros 3

Houston Tino Martinez hit a two-run homer off Roy Oswalt in the eighth inning to lift St. Louis. The Cardinals won for the eighth time in nine games and improved to 8-2 against Houston this season. Lance Berkman homered twice for the Astros, including a two-run drive in the eighth that pulled Houston to 4-3. He has 17 home runs this year. Gene Stechschulte (6-1) got the win despite giving up two runs in 113 innings.

Braves 5, Expos 1

Atlanta Tom Glavine pitched a five-hitter and Rafael Furcal drove in two runs, leading Atlanta. Glavine (8-2) extended his scoreless streak against the Expos to 32 innings before Jose Vidro hit a solo home run with one out in the ninth to extend his hitting streak to 21 games. Glavine hadn’t allowed a run to Montreal since Aug. 29, 2001. Glavine struck out eight, didn’t issue a walk and lowered his ERA to a major league-leading 1.59. The Braves scored four times in the third against Tony Armas (5-6).

Marlins 5, Mets 3

New York Luis Castillo extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a pair of run-scoring singles and had two of Florida’s seven stolen bases. Ryan Dempster (3-5) limited the Mets to one hit over the first five innings as the Marlins ended a 14-game road trip the longest in franchise history with a victory.

Pirates 3, Cubs 2,

10 innings

Pittsburgh Keith Osik’s first pinch hit of the season drove in the winning run off Chicago closer Antonio Alfonseca in the 10th as Pittsburgh overcame another strong start by prospect Mark Prior. The Pirates squandered one-runs leads in the eighth and ninth innings, only to win it in the 10th after Jack Wilson walked with two outs and Brian Giles singled him to third. Osik, batting .158 and 0-for-6 as a pinch-hitter, then singled sharply into left on a 3-2 pitch by Alfonseca (0-1).

Padres 8, Rockies 5

San Diego Ryan Klesko homered and drove in two runs for San Diego, which took advantage of another meltdown by Mike Hampton. San Diego snapped the Rockies’ six-game winning streak. The Padres, home from their third 1-5 road trip of the season, won for just the third time in 11 games.
