Earnest Paul Sherlock

Mr. Sherlock died Friday, May 24, 2002, at his home.

He was born Feb. 18, 1921, in Fort Scott, the son of Fred Raymond and Rosena Gladys (Johnson) Sherlock. After his birth, his family moved to Marshall, Mo., and then to Granite City, Ill., where he began attending school. The family then moved to Old Cannon Mines, Mo., where he finished school. He moved to Kansas in 1937, and lived with his aunt and uncle Esther and Melvin Holmes.

Mr. Sherlock served in the U.S. Navy from Feb. 3, 1942, to Sept. 2, 1945, during World War II. He earned various medals, including the American Area Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign and Philippines Liberation medals, the Presidential Citation for the Philippines and the Victory World War II Medal.

He later worked various jobs at the Vermillion Box Factory, Rhine’s Laundry and at Critchfield’s Garage, all in Baldwin. He also worked for Stokley-VanCamp, Lawrence. In 1956, he attended Mohler Barber College, Kansas City Mo. He worked with Bill Whitney in Baldwin before going to work at Trailwood Barber Shop, Overland Park, where he worked until his retirement in July 1999.

He was a member of Baldwin Church of Christ.

He married Marcena Faye Vitt on Jan. 1, 1945. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, David Dale, Independence, Kan., and Stuart Sam, Baldwin; a daughter, Cindy Carol Sherlock McGill, Kansas City, Kan.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Monday at Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home, Baldwin, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday.
