Commission hears other funding requests

Commissioners heard several budget requests Monday:

Police Chief Ron Olin asked for a departmental increase from $10.11 million to $10.56 million, which would include a new “legal adviser” and add 15 more officers to the 123-person department.

The requested increase is more than it appears. The city took $235,000 allotted to the Lawrence Humane Society from the police department’s 2002 budget and gave it its own line for 2003, which means it wasn’t included in the proposed budget.

Assistant City Manager Dave Corliss asked that the legal services department, which includes the Municipal Court, be increased from nearly $1.06 million to nearly $1.08 million.

He additionally asked the commission to approve a $34,5000 audit of the Municipal Court.

City Clerk Frank Reeb asked for an increase in the city’s administrative services budget from $896,355 to $1.01 million  due largely to insurance fee increases.

Planning Director Linda Finger asked for less money: $827,937, down from the 2002 budget of $879,410.
