William D. Wolfe, retiring school superintendent, was honored at a banquet by more than 600 people. He was to be succeeded by Carl Knox.

IN 1902

On May 19, 1902, the Lawrence World editorialized: “The Grand Army encampments do not seem to lag in popular interest. The old soldiers attend in great numbers and look forward to the event with rare anticipation. It is no time to point out to these men that their days will soon be over. They will have many more. They have really only begun to live. The veteran of the civil war is still young in the hearts of his countrymen and although the years may touch him and stiffen his joints the love of his fellowmen will wrap him round about and soften his declining years so greatly that there can be no death.”
