KU’s Russell wins hammer

? Kansas University’s Scott Russell won the hammer throw by 18 feet, and KU’s Andrew Morris led the decathlon after the first day of the rain-plagued Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Russell won the hammer throw by 18 feet over Missouri’s Russ Bell.

“The win is what I came for, and it’s what I got,” Russell said. “I got the 10 points for the team. With the two boys from Missouri, Micah (Shanks) and Russ, there was reason to worry. But I was definitely happy with what I did.”

Morris leads the decathlon with 3,926 points, winning the 400-meter run and the high jump. Iowa State’s Mike Mwangong won the 10,000 meters, beating Colorado’s Edwardo Torres in the final 200 meters.

Nebraska’s Katherine Livesey won the opening four events of the women’s heptathlon and set two personal bests.

Still, Baylor leads the women’s standings with 18 points, nine ahead of Colorado. Missouri leads the men’s competition, 14 more than Iowa State.

The meet continues today and runs through Sunday.
