The article made it fairly clear that when all agencies that help homeless people are included, actually more money is spent on those agencies than on the humane society. However, this should not be an either/or situation. Shelters for both homeless animals and people need generous support, not just from city funds, but also from our own personal budgets of time and money. Neither of those services has enough money to do all that needs to be done. Just imagine our town without them.

Thanks to the expert direction of Midge Grinstead and her dedicated staff, every penny counts for the animals that come to them homeless and helpless. The staff and volunteers go way beyond the call of duty to find good homes for the hundreds of animals who come to them each year. Gandhi once said: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Thanks to the humane society, Lawrence can claim some of that “moral progress.”

I encourage everyone to visit the shelter, donate time and/or money when you can, and adopt your companion animal from the shelter rather than from a pet store. Pet stores and breeders contribute to the pet overpopulation crisis and support the cruel puppy mill industry.
