Prep Athletes of the Week

City

Aaron Madill, Lawrence High

Sport: Baseball.

Class: Junior.

The week: Madill, now 6-0 with two saves and a 2.04 earned run average, threw a two-hitter with four strikeouts to lift Lawrence High to a 1-0 victory over Manhattan in the Class 6A regional championship Tuesday at Ice Field.

Comment: “Aaron has been so effective for us as a reliever, we moved him into a starting role on Tuesday and he responded with a two-hit shutout over a very good Manhattan team,” LHS coach David Petry said. “He has the rare abilty to go out on the mound in pressure situations and not let it bother him. You give him the ball and you know he is going to throw strikes and get people out.”

Area

Matt Noonan, Baldwin

Sport: Track.

Class: Senior.

The week: Noonan, a Missouri signee, won the 800 (1:56.96), 1600 (4:38.43) and 3200 (9:51.43) and a 53.1 lead-off split on the third-place 4×400 relay team to help the Bulldogs win the Frontier League championship. His 800 and 3200 times were league records.

Comment: “Matt is a great team leader,” BHS coach Mike Spielman said. “Most guys would have wanted to just run well in a couple of events, but he made a sacrifice for the team and he always has.”
