Transit committee to hear plan for free student service

A proposal by KU on Wheels would allow students with a KU on Wheels bus pass to ride the Lawrence T for free. The city would keep track of student passes and then bill KU on Wheels for the rides. The city’s Public Transit Advisory Committee will hear about the proposal Tuesday.

Customer service: Journal-World subscribers now have easier way to pay

Subscribers to the Lawrence Journal-World now can have their subscription payments withdrawn automatically from checking, savings, money market, debit or credit card accounts.

Called “Smart Pay,” the program allows payments to be withdrawn from the account of the subscriber’s choice on a monthly basis, said Joe Lewis, the newspaper’s circulation manager.

“Smart Pay allows our subscribers to save both time and money,” Lewis said. “No checks to write, no envelopes to address, no stamps to buy.”

Customers who have payments withdrawn from bank accounts can choose one of three days of the month for their account to be debited the fifth, 15th, or 21st.

For more information, or to sign up for Smart Pay, call 843-1000 or (800) 578-8748.

Crime: Airline uniforms stolen

Kansas City, Mo. Uniforms for employees of three airlines were among items stolen from a truck earlier this month, FBI spokesman Jeff Lanza said Wednesday.

The truck belonged to Cintas The Uniform People, and was stolen May 4 from a facility in downtown Kansas City. The truck was recovered a day later, but the cargo, including airport uniforms used by ground crew and ramp workers, was missing, Lanza said.

The FBI does not have any information that the thieves had intended to steal the uniforms to gain access to an airport, Lanza said.

He would not identify the three airlines to which the uniforms belonged.

Even if the thieves meant to use the uniforms to get into an airport, they would have to have the proper identification, Lanza said.

“Everything about the incident is consistent with a theft of cargo for black market or resale,” Lanza said.

Authorities do not have any suspects, he said.
