Old home town – 100 years ago today

On May 11, 1902, the Lawrence World discussed a proposed electric line that would run between Kansas City and Lawrence. The World commented, “There is little to be gained by knocking on the proposed electric line. It is the inevitable, and we might as well adjust ourselves to it. The right or wrong of the case has nothing to do with the situation. It is headed this way and will be here before the year is out. As for this paper, it is not afraid of the outcome. Our merchants already sell goods cheaper than in Kansas City. They have less expense, and the only argument in favor of Kansas City as a trading point is the assortment. To set up a hue and cry about the electric line is to say that Lawrence merchants cannot meet competition. They always have, and they always will.”
