National League Roundup: Phillies’ Padilla blanks D’backs

Arizona manages just two hits against Philadelphia hurler

? Vicente Padilla showed why Philadelphia wanted him in the Curt Schilling trade two years ago.

Padilla came within four outs of a no-hitter against his former team and finished with a two-hitter, leading the Philadelphia Phillies over the Arizona Diamondbacks, 4-0, Friday night.

“When people read Padilla’s name, they said, ‘Who’s Padilla?'” Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. “Now they’re starting to find out who Padilla is.”

Padilla (5-2) was acquired by Philadelphia in the Schilling trade in July 2000, along with Tavis Lee, Omar Daal and Nelson Figueroa.

The 24-year-old right-hander from Nicaragua retired 14 consecutive batters before pinch-hitter Chris Donnels doubled with two outs in the eighth. Miguel Batista singled leading off the ninth, and Padilla finished for his first complete game in eight major league starts all this season.

“I felt happy I was throwing a no-hitter and that it was against the team that signed me,” Padilla said as Philadelphia bullpen coach Ramon Henderson translated from Spanish. “Against Donnels, it was a two-seamer I was trying to keep down and away but I left it up.”

Bobby Abreu and Doug Glanville homered to help the Phillies to their seventh straight victory, their longest winning streak since May 4-10, 1995.

With two outs in the eighth, Donnels batted for pitcher Rick Helling (3-4) and hit a liner down the left-field line that bounced fair, then bounded over a fence in foul territory for a ground-rule double.

“I tried to be aggressive and was looking to drive something the other way,” Donnels said. “Fortunately, it stayed fair. Padilla had great stuff, he was painting the corners all night.”

Padilla was bidding to become the first pitcher to no-hit a World Series champion since Nolan Ryan of Texas did it at Oakland on June 11, 1990.

Rockies 9, Mets 5

New York Todd Helton homered twice and Jason Jennings held the Mets in check as Colorado handed New York its sixth straight loss. Juan Pierre hit a three-run double, Jose Ortiz went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and Todd Hollandsworth had three hits for the Rockies, who improved to 9-4 under new manager Clint Hurdle.

Cardinals 4, Reds 2

Cincinnati Edgar Renteria hit a two-run homer on closer Danny Graves’ first pitch in the eighth inning, powering St. Louis past Cincinnati. Albert Pujols had three hits and Eli Marrero snapped an 0-for-30 slump with a single, but the Cardinals needed a homer from their light-hitting shortstop to end the Reds’ three-game winning streak. The Cardinals have won consecutive games for the first time since April 26-27.

Expos 6, Giants 3

Montreal Javier Vazquez pitched eight crisp innings and Orlando Cabrera and Vladimir Guerrero each had three hits to lead Montreal over San Francisco, ending the Giants’ season-high seven-game winning streak. Vazquez (2-2) scattered six hits including a leadoff homer and an RBI double by David Bell.

Pirates 5, Astros 1

Pittsburgh Jimmy Anderson took a shutout into the seventh inning, and Kevin Young hit his first homer in nearly a month to lead Pittsburgh past Houston. Young hadn’t homered since April 11 and was in a 6-for-56 slump.

Braves 7, Padres 3

Atlanta Andruw Jones homered twice and had five RBIs, hitting a three-run drive in the eighth inning that sparked Atlanta over San Diego. Jones doubled in his first at-bat but was picked off by Padres starter Dennis Tankersley, making his major league debut.

Marlins 4, Dodgers 3

Miami Luis Castillo’s bases-loaded bloop single in the ninth inning drove in the winning run, and first-place Florida won its fifth game in a row

Brewers 6, Cubs 4

Chicago Tyler Houston tied the game with a three-run homer, and Jeffrey Hammonds hit a two-run shot in Milwaukee’s victory over Chicago. Richie Sexson homered for the second straight day for the Brewers.
