Defense attorney stays in Baldwin shooting case

A Baldwin man accused of shooting his neighbor’s boyfriend will be allowed to keep his attorney, District Judge Jack Murphy ruled Monday.

Stephen Meeker, 34, is accused of shooting Steven Swafford, 31, on Oct. 14, 2001.

Meeker’s first trial ended April 3 in a hung jury. During the trial, Meeker’s attorney, Jim Rumsey, took the stand to refute testimony that Rumsey knew about a conversation between a sheriff’s lieutenant and a witness.

The District Attorney’s Office filed a motion asking that Rumsey be removed from the case because he testified in the first trial.

Murphy said it was unlikely Rumsey would testify in the second trial, which is scheduled to begin July 10. He also said removing Rumsey from the case would be a hardship for Meeker.
