Committee to revisit redistricting today

? A House-Senate conference committee is scheduled to meet today to try to approve a plan to redraw congressional district boundaries.

The committee has done little work on redistricting since the overtime legislative session started May 1.

“If we could just get together we could do something,” said Rep. Mike O’Neal, R-Hutchinson. Scheduling conflicts so far have prevented the committee from meeting.

In the middle of any redistricting plan is Lawrence, which is currently in the 3rd Congressional District.

A House-approved plan would split the city between the 2nd and 3rd districts, while a Senate map would place it in a newly drawn 2nd District.

The Senate proposal, however, appears dead because of the way the plan would carve southeast Kansas into four different districts.

O’Neal said splitting Lawrence is more likely, though Democrats say Lawrence can be kept in the 3rd District by splitting parts of either Johnson or Wyandotte counties.
