St. Louis: Two firefighters killed while rescuing colleague

Two firefighters charged into the flaming building to look for another who was lost in the confusion. But while their colleague found his own way out, the two who had tried to rescue him did not.

By the time Derek Martin and Rob Morrison both 38-year-old married fathers were found in Friday night’s four-alarm fire, it was too late. They died later at a hospital.

The fire broke out about 9:30 p.m. at Gravois Refrigeration Co. Investigators on Saturday were trying to pinpoint what sparked the blaze, which began after Gravois Refrigeration had closed for the night.

West Virginia: Recovery crews search for victims of flood

Streams began receding Saturday in the ravaged central Appalachians as rescue workers searched the hills and valleys for more victims of devastating floods that killed at least six people.

Amid light rain, recovery crews worked to reopen roads blocked by mud, boulders and washouts in the region that encompasses parts of southern West Virginia, western Virginia and eastern Kentucky.

The death roll rose Saturday when a tree loosened by the flooding crashed down a hill along U.S. Highway 52 onto a sports utility vehicle, killing one of two adults inside. Three children scrambled out the back with minor injuries.

Many residents have accused the timber and coal industries of worsening the flood threat by stripping the land.

California: Bikers, police gather for Hells Angels funeral

With the city’s entire police force on alert, hundreds of motorcyclists rumbled into town Saturday to remember two Hells Angels killed in a gang fight at a Nevada casino a week ago.

The fight last Saturday in Laughlin, Nev., spawned rumors of a turf war between the Hells Angels, Mongols and other motorcycle gangs nationwide. But there were no incidents at the funeral.

The fight between members of the Hells Angels and Mongols disrupted the annual Laughlin River Run, one of the nation’s largest motorcycle rallies. Among those killed were Robert Emmett “Festes” Tumelty, 50, of Stockton, and Jeramie Dean Bell, 27, of nearby Hughson.

The street near the funeral home was lined with at least 1,000 bikes from as far as Indiana and Massachusetts.
