A’s activate Velarde

Chicago The Oakland Athletics activated infielder Randy Velarde from the 15-day disabled list before Saturday’s game against the Chicago White Sox, and optioned outfielder Mike Colangelo to Triple A-Sacramento. Velarde, who had been on the 15-day disabled list since April 5 with a broken left hand, was in the A’s lineup Saturday night. Velarde was hit on the hand by a pitch from Texas’ Chan Ho Park on opening night in his first at-bat.

Jays demote Cassidy

Toronto The Toronto Blue Jays made room on their major league roster for right-hander Pete Walker on Saturday by optioning right-hander Scott Cassidy to Triple-A Syracuse. The Blue Jays claimed Walker on waivers from the New York Mets on Friday. Walker, 33, appeared in one game for the Mets this season, allowing one run in an inning against Montreal on April 20.
