Students’ creations displayed at arts center

The annual Lawrence Public Schools Art Show is on display through May 24 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

All Lawrence public schools are represented and media include sculpture, jewelry, photographs and paintings. A charcoal portrait by Maxwell Phillips, a student at South Junior High School, above left, is among the works. The elementary and junior high school exhibit is up through mid-May and then the high school exhibit will be shown.

KU Edition arts calendar taking submissions

It’s time to start getting together your event listing for the arts and entertainment section of the 2002 KU Edition.

We want to know about your dance, theater, music and other performing arts programs and about museum and gallery exhibitions. We want to know about community fairs, parades and any special event you might be planning in Lawrence or surrounding communities.

Deadline for calendar submissions is June 3. The KU Edition will be published in mid-August.

It’s time to sign up for the annual ArtWalk

Registration forms are available for the Eighth Annual Lawrence ArtWalk, a self-guided tour of Lawrence artists’ studios, art galleries and other art spaces. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 26 and noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 27.

There are three categories of participation: artist, art gallery and artists’ collective. Artists must be Douglas County residents or have a Lawrence address for their studio or storefront business. Galleries and collectives must be in Lawrence.

Forms are available at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H., or by calling the arts center, 843-2787, or organizer John Wysocki, 865-4254. Wysocki says the “early-bird” deadline is June 1, while the “cooked-goose” deadline is July 1.

KU carillonneur to give organ recital at Bales

Elizabeth Berghout, carillonneur and Kansas University faculty member, will perform an organ recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Bales Organ Recital Hall, adjacent to the Lied Center.

“An Evening of Twentieth-Century North American Organ Music” features recent compositions by Franklin D. Ashdown and KU professors Bryan Kip Haaheim and Charles Hoag; “Pageant” by Leo Sowerby; “Sonatina” by Robert Cundick; and “Prelude in D-Flat” by Julia Smith.

The recital is free and open to the public.

Works from Wyeth’s Helga series in Omaha

Omaha, Neb. Selections from Andrew Wyeth’s Helga series are on display at the Joslyn Art Museum starting Saturday. The works have never been shown at a Midwestern museum.

The exhibition, titled “Andrew Wyeth’s Helga Pictures: An Intimate Study,” will run through Aug. 4. It features 70 works by Wyeth.

The exhibit includes tempera and drybrush paintings, watercolors and pencil studies. It shows Wyeth’s study of his neighbor Helga Testorf over 15 years.

Admission is $6 for adults; $4 for college students and senior citizens; and $3.50 for youths ages 5-17.

Lawrence artists picked for show in Massachusetts

Cambridge, Mass. Works by two Lawrence artists have been selected for the Cambridge Art Assn. National Prize Show, which runs through June 24 at Kathryn Schultz Gallery and University Place Gallery, both in Cambridge.

The local artists are Henri Doner-Hedrick and Yoonmi Nam.

The juror was Lisa Dennison, deputy director and chief curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City.
