James Muyskens accepts top job at New York City college

A former dean of Kansas University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has been named president of Queens College in New York City.

James Muyskens, who served at KU from 1988 to 1995, was named to the position Monday by the City University of New York trustees.

Muyskens, 59, will start his new job in August.

He’s spent the last seven years at the University System of Georgia as senior vice chancellor for academic affairs from 1995 to 1999.

He then served as chief executive officer and dean of faculty at Gwinnett University Center in Lawrenceville, Ga., which is a joint effort of the University of Georgia and Georgia Perimeter College. The center focuses on high-tech and distance education.

Before coming to KU, Muyskens spent 17 years as a philosophy professor, associate provost and acting provost at Hunter College, also in the CUNY system. His wife, Alda, is a graduate of Queens College.

Muyskens graduated from Central College in Iowa in 1964 and Princeton Theological Seminary in 1967. He earned master’s degree and doctorate in philosophy from the University of Michigan in 1971. His published articles include some on ethics among health-care providers.

Muyskens will replace Allen L. Sessoms, who left in August 2000. Queens College has an enrollment of about 15,200 students.
