Brown v. Topeka: Monroe School rehabilitation focus of meeting

? A national historic site to open next spring in Topeka will educate the public about the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Topeka Board of Education.

Members of the public can get an update on how rehabilitation of the former Monroe Elementary School is proceeding at a community meeting from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. April 13 in the Potawatomi Room on the second floor of the Koch Industries Education Center, 6425 S.W. Sixth Ave., Topeka.

Project supervisors will provide information on the site, located at 1515 Monroe St., and explain the site’s goal: to educate visitors about Brown and its influence on the modern Civil Rights Movement.

The public opening of the site is tentatively scheduled for May 17, 2003. The grand opening is scheduled for May 17, 2004, in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the case.
