Scouting news

Members of Boy Scout Troop 55, chartered by Westside Presbyterian Church, were backpackers March 15-18 in The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge near Lawton, Okla.

Those who camped in the wilderness area were Brandon Nightingale, Patrick Denning, Matthew Avila, Travis Andregg, Scott Hird, Logan Marienau, Austin Meyer, Micah Clark, Keith Cowart, Matt James, Grady Walker, Bryant Denning, Oliver Devlin and Andrew Sigler, Boy Scouts; and Joe Wilson, Laurie Marienau, Rick Hird, Dan Affalter, Mark Avila and Scott Braden, leaders. To protect the refuge only 10 people were allowed to camp in the back country at a time.

Those who camped at the base were: Andrew Clancy, Shawn Scott, Will Middleton, Kameron Gibler, Drew Braden, Chase Samuels, Corey Vadnais, Kevin Willmott, Ben Vogel, Andrew Boyd, Michael Scott, David Hanson, Brandon Mailand, Boy Scouts; and George Vogel, Jill Barringer, Don Clancy and Deb Vannicola, leaders.

Those camping worked on their backpacking, hiking and boulder-hopping skills. Buffalo, elk, wild turkey and longhorn cattle were seen in the area. Scouts worked on rank advancement and orienteering, and learned to rappel and climb rocks.

Members of Cub Scout Pack 3057, charted by the Lawrence Catholic School PTO, were responsible for busing tables at the Lenten Fish Fry March 15 at St. John the Evangelist Church. Cubs who participated in the service project were Lucas Vogelsang, Ethan Vogelsang, Patrick Shields, Henry Hodges, Dom Reiske, Adam Ramos, Jimmy Kittel and Jacob Pfeifer. Boys Scouts Sean Ridenour, Troop 52, and Stephen May, Troop 53, also helped.

Cub Scout Pack 3057, chartered by the Lawrence Catholic School PTO, and the Corpus Christi Knights of Columbus Council 12960, co-sponsored a pancake breakfast March 17 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. The breakfast benefited a local Seminarian and the Cub Scout Pack. Cubs who worked at the breakfast were Ethan Vogelsang, Lucas Vogelsang, Patrick Shields, Michael Smith, Henry Hodges, Carrick Finnegan, Dom Reiske, Adam Ramos, Brady Murrish and Eric Long.

Boy Scout Troop 52, chartered to the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence, had a campout March 15-17 at Lake Perry. The younger boys, led by two Life Scouts, hiked five miles. The older boys, most with full backpacks, hiked 15 miles.

Scouts who attended were Henry Reiske, Nick Joseph, Charlie Turner, Pete Tuttle, Justin Deaver, Levi Klundt, Wes Hinkle, Jack Berkowitz, Roland Klundt, David Wingerson, Cyril Cook, Mason McCurdy, David Long, Matthew Rogers, Will Sharp, Bill Berkowitz and Evan Tedlock. Josh Cosgrove attended March 16. Adult leaders who camped out were Wayne Deaver, Scoutmaster, and Glen Sharp and Jason Wingert, Assistant Scoutmasters.
