A Eudora man was killed early Friday after he was thrown from his car and it rolled onto him, officials with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

The driver, identified as James D. Shoemaker, 23, had swerved to avoid hitting a Eudora police car stopped near 10th and Walnut streets, a sheriff’s report said. The patrol car had its red emergency lights on, the report said.

The accident occurred about 1:30 a.m.

A Eudora police officer had stopped and was talking with a pedestrian in front of the patrol car, sheriff’s Lt. Kathy Tate said. The patrol car was facing east on 10th Street, Tate said.

Shoemaker was driving his car east when he swerved and struck an embankment and a stop sign. The car then overturned, ejecting Shoemaker and coming to a rest on top of him, Tate said. The Pontiac did not hit the police car, Tate said.

Seven police, sheriff and emergency medical personnel were needed to lift the car off Shoemaker, Tate said.

Sheriff’s officers continue to investigate the accident. No information was released Friday about how fast Shoemaker’s car was traveling or whether alcohol was a factor.
