s in a name

At least her name isn’t Lester.

In January, parents-to-be Scott and Jodi Schlesener struck a deal: If the Kansas University Jayhawks won the national basketball championship by the time Jodi delivered the rural Perry couple’s fifth child  due April 3  the baby would bear the name Boschee.

Scott also persuaded his wife to agree to a “benefit of the doubt” clause: If the baby arrived early and the Jayhawks were still in the tournament, the baby would be named for Boschee anyway.

That’s Boschee as in Jeff Boschee, of course, the Jayhawks’ formidable three-point shooting guard.

“I thought we’d get kicked out (of the tournament) early,” Jodi admitted. “I thought it was safe (to make the deal), but it wasn’t.”

Scott wanted Boschee as a first name for the baby. But Jodi drew the line, saying she “couldn’t handle that.”

Their latest child came early, the day before KU’s Friday victory over Illinois. It seems Deavynn (pronounced Devon) Boschee Christine Schlesener couldn’t wait until the end of the NCAA Tournament to enter the world.

She was born at 12:04 a.m. Thursday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She weighed 7 pounds, 2 ounces, and was 19 inches long. She and mom went home Sunday, in time for the Oregon game.

Scott Schlesener said he can’t be sure yet the child will grow into an avid Jayhawk fan.

“But,” he said, “she did lay in my arms watching the whole game without crying.”

Jodi, 30, said a KU championship would make her feel better about the girl’s name. Scott, 31, said he’s happy with it  win or lose  because of Jeff Boschee’s ability and character.

“He’s the favorite in the family,” Scott said. “He plays well and always has a solid game. And he’s never cocky, and that means a lot to us.”

Scott and Jodi always have been big Jayhawk fans. Jodi grew up in Lawrence and attended KU’s School of Education before transferring to Washburn University.

Scott, a financial planner in Topeka, tried to sneak in a KU basketball player’s name for each of the couple’s four previous children, ages 2 to 7.

He wanted to name their last child Lester Earl  until they found out they would have a girl. So instead, he had to settle for naming the family dog Raef LaTerrier.
