Culture melding: ‘Margaritaville’ meets ‘Tiny Bubbles’ in Hawaii

Honolulu  Singer Jimmy Buffett drew a big crowd for a hastily arranged one-man concert in Waikiki.

“This is what happens when you get bored on Maui,” he told about 500 fans at the beachfront Duke’s Canoe Club and more than 1,000 others watching from the beach on Thursday.

Buffett has been vacationing in Hawaii and writing a book on Maui.

The barefoot and lei-draped Buffett opened the late-afternoon show with a “Tiny Bubbles” duet with entertainer Don Ho.

Fire damages Pacino guest house

Palisades, N.Y. Â A pre-dawn fire heavily damaged a guest house on Al Pacino’s Rockland County estate, sending several of the actor’s friends into the subfreezing night, police said. No one was hurt.

Pacino, star of “Serpico,” “Scarface” and the “Godfather” films, was in the main house and was roused as firetrucks arrived.

The fire was reported at 4:25 a.m. Friday and all the occupants left the guest house by the time police and firefighters arrived, Orangetown Police said. Neither the police nor Pacino’s publicist would identify the guests.

Estefan trespassing order widens

Miami  A prosecutor intends to seek a jail sentence against a Venezuelan singer-actor charged with trespassing at the island home of Gloria and Emilio Estefan.

The Estefans have obtained a civil restraining order to keep Juan Carlos Diaz away from them, and a similar order was widened Friday as part of his bail on the criminal trespass charge.

Diaz, 33, must stay away from the famous music couple, their homes on exclusive Star Island and three of the Estefans’ best-known businesses: their studio, office and a restaurant.

The Estefans claim Diaz has harassed them at their home and gym. Those claims were made after Diaz accused Emilio Estefan of making unwelcome sexual advances toward him at the gym where all three worked out. Emilio Estefan has denied Diaz’s allegations and has filed a civil suit accusing him of defamation.

Rosie’s ads too late for action

Tallahassee  Talk-show host Rosie O’Donnell bought full-page ads in several Florida newspapers urging the Legislature to repeal a law that bans gays from adopting children.

But lawmakers say they can’t consider O’Donnell’s request  at least not this year. They were to conclude their 60-day regular session Friday and there were no bills addressing the issue.

O’Donnell, the host of “The Rosie O’Donnell Show,” recently stated publicly that she was a lesbian. She acknowledged that she was “fairly ignorant” of the workings of the Legislature but hoped to have legislation filed for next year’s regular session.

She has three adopted children.
