Organization strives to rescue horses

Greyhound rescue groups have done a great job of placing racing retirees and rejects. In an equine corollary to this, New York Horse Rescue hopes to do as well getting thoroughbred racetracks and owners to turn to them instead of the slaughterhouse.

Its Web site, www.nyhr.org, highlights adoptable horses  as well as controversial issues such as PMU (“pregnant mare’s urine”) foals. In order to make Premarin, a popular and profitable estrogen replacement, mares are bred and confined so their urine can be collected.
