s Williams enjoying hectic March schedule
Let’s get this straight.
Kansas University coach Roy Williams, busy preparing for KU’s Sweet 16 game against Illinois on Friday, was in Hutchinson on Tuesday morning to scout potential recruits at the national junior college tournament and then back in Lawrence on Tuesday afternoon for the Jayhawks’ two-hour basketball practice.
A bundle of energy at the age of 51, Williams has been a man possessed of late, a whirlwind of activity. He’s been recruiting on almost every off day since Christmas.
It’s made some wonder when this guy gets any rest, any sleep.
“I’ve tried very hard this year to get more because I don’t think it’s healthy, what I’ve done for many, many years,” Williams said.
“So right now I’m probably in the bed for 512 to 612 hours. It’s not as much sleep as I’d like because if I do wake at 4:30 in the morning or whatever it’s almost impossible to go back to sleep because I think about too many things. But I’m trying my best to make sure I’m in the bed somewhere around six hours.
“It’s so hectic and I’m one of those guys who tries to make sure we touch every base, cross the T’s and dot the I’s. I love the spring when I can get out on the golf course and just breathe the fresh air and do things like that. Almost every day at lunch I do try to go out and work out. It could be walk, could be treadmill, could be run, could be stretch. But I do take an hour to 1:15 every day to try to get away from the telephone.”
Not that he’s complaining about the time crunch. Williams actually likes recruiting and he even took time to sign autographs for fans in Hutch.
“Phog Allen a hundred million years ago told Dick Harp that the head basketball coach at Kansas ought to be accessible, to the people of Kansas particularly,” Williams said. “He ought to talk to the people, he ought to travel with the people and I’ve always remembered that.
“I love this time of year. I love the tournament,” he said. “I love the atmosphere and the excitement our kids have.”
The Jayhawks will leave Topeka at 6 tonight for their Sweet 16 game against Illinois on Friday night in Madison, Wis.
