IN 1962

Flood protection along the Kansas River at Lawrence was being studied by the city commission with the possibility of its becoming the sponsoring agency, with federal help, for extensive levee revamping here.

IN 1902

On March 19, 1902, the Lawrence World’s headline read “For a County Infirmary,” and the accompanying article began, “Douglas County has inaugurated a new policy in dealing with the pauper question. As a result, a distinct saving of several thousands of dollars every year is being made. The poor commissioner, who is an ideal man for the place, is working conscientiously and never denies aid to the deserving but he is not running things at loose ends and is saving money for the people. It is the intention of sending all the county wards to the county farm after June 1. This will necessitate another building. … We will have to grapple with this pauper question, and now is as good a time as any. The present system has fostered a pauper class. In this county, three generations have been known to get aid at one time. With a better regulated system of charity, this would be impossible.”
