Arkansas: Wal-Mart wins ruling against union

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has won a court injunction to keep union organizers out of its 3,200 U.S. stores.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Jessica Moser said Wal-Mart employees have asked the company repeatedly since 1999, when the union activity began, to stop members of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union from “harassing them.”

A permanent injunction issued Friday by Chancery Judge Jim D. Spears prohibits the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union from soliciting inside Wal-Mart buildings in the United States. Violators can be held in contempt of court.

Union organizers can still legally solicit in store parking lots, as other groups can, Moser said.

LOS ANGELES: Earthquake shakes California coast

An earthquake of estimated magnitude-4.6 centered in the Pacific Ocean rattled the Southern California coast on Saturday.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The earthquake was widely felt along the Southern California coast, from Santa Barbara to Long Beach, and across the entire Los Angeles basin.

The offshore temblor occurred at 1:33 p.m., centered 44 miles south of Ventura in open water due west of Long Beach, according to a preliminary report from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

“Fortunately, the shaking wasn’t too bad,” Susan Hough, a U.S. Geological Survey seismologist, said of the quake, technically classified as light or small.

The minivan spun and continued backward into oncoming traffic when it was struck by the tractor-trailer.

The six victims, including the driver, were 19 years old.

SAN DIEGO: Mourners remember slain 7-year-old

Family and friends of a slain girl gathered Saturday to remember Danielle van Dam for her typical childhood pursuits, including hiking in nearby canyons and helping her mom in the kitchen.

More than 1,000 people attended the memorial in La Jolla Shores, an oceanside park Danielle’s father said was one of her favorite places.

“Danielle, we miss you,” classmate Michelle Wintersteen told mourners at a park overlooking the Pacific Ocean. “The school misses you. The community misses you.”

Danielle, 7, was abducted Feb. 1 from her family’s home.

A neighbor of the van Dam family, David Westerfield, is being held on murder, kidnapping and child pornography charges.

NEW YORK: For fourth time, Liza Minnelli marries

Guests at Liza Minnelli’s fourth wedding said she danced at the altar Saturday as a bevy of celebrities helped her and producer David Gest celebrate their nuptials.

Best man Michael Jackson carried the train of Minnelli’s white, silk Bob Mackie dress until maid of honor Marisa Berenson remembered her duties, guests told reporters clustered outside the church.

Minnelli, the daughter of Judy Garland, was wed previously to entertainer Peter Allen (1967-72), producer Jack Haley Jr. (1974-79), and stage manager/sculptor Mark Gero (1979-92).

Minnelli, who turned 56 on Tuesday, and Gest will honeymoon in Thailand.
