Wreck critically injures student

A Kansas University student was in critical condition at a Kansas City area hospital Friday after he was injured in a one-car accident on campus.

Rescue workers labored more than 30 minutes to extricate Paul Hindley, 20, an Overland Park sophomore, who was a passenger in the front seat of a car that struck a utility pole and a tree, said Lt. Schuyler Bailey of the KU Public Safety Department.

Firefighters work to stabilize a passenger, Kansas University student Paul Hindley, as others work with heavy extraction equipment to free him from the twisted wreckage of a one-car accident. The wreck occurred shortly after 2 a.m. Friday near the intersection of Jayhawk Boulevard and Sunflower Road on the KU campus.

Hindley was taken by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and then by helicopter to the Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., Bailey said.

The accident was discovered about 2 a.m. along Mississippi Street just north of Jayhawk Boulevard by a KU patrol officer, Bailey said.

“We don’t think it occurred too much earlier,” Bailey said.

A second passenger, riding in the back seat of the 1995 Nissan Altima, was identified by KU police as Ian Schuster, 21, a KU junior from Glendale, Mo. He was taken by ambulance to LMH where he was treated and released, a hospital spokesman said.

The car driven by Ryan Vandover, 21, St. Louis, a KU sophomore, was southbound on Mississippi Street when it missed a curve and went out of control just north of Jayhawk Boulevard, Bailey said.

Vandover was not injured. He was taken in handcuffs by police to the Douglas County Jail, where his blood alcohol content was tested. The results of that test were not disclosed. He was then released, and no charges have been filed. An investigation is continuing, Bailey said.

Vandover could not be reached for comment Friday afternoon. Contacted at home, Schuster said he didn’t remember much about the accident.

“I’m pretty sore all over,” he said.

Schuster said he had been drinking earlier in the night but “couldn’t speak for the other guys.”
