An investigation was called to question 30 possible witnesses following a police shooting of Lawrence Picotte, 23, a Haskell Indian Junior College freshman, as officers confronted him in front of a local bar for questioning in an armed robbery investigation. Judge James Paddock was to be in charge. Three local officers had been suspended pending a decision on the case.

A community appreciation dinner was being planned for local school Supt. W.D. Wolfe, who was to retire from his post July 31.

IN 1962

Snow flurries continued, and temperatures refused to push beyond the 20s in the winter-weary region.

The Kansas University two-mile relay team of Bill Dotson, Bill Thornton, Tonni Coane and Kirk Hagan set an American record of 7:30.8 in the prestigious Chicago Daily News indoor meet.
