Thomas Scott Dean

He was born July 6, 1924, in Sherman, Tex., the son of L.C. and Lucille Scott Dean. He lived in Lawrence since moving from Stillwater, Okla., in 1976.

Mr. Dean received a bachelor’s degree from North Texas State University in Denton, Tex., in 1947. He received his master’s degree from North Texas State in 1949 and later received his doctorate from the University of Texas in 1963. He served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Dean was a retired professor of architecture and architectural engineering at the Kansas University School of Architecture and Urban Design. Earlier, he taught at North Texas State, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Southern Methodist University, University of Texas, Oklahoma State University and North East London Polytechnic. He also had a private architectural practice in Dallas from 1946 to 1960.

He specialized in domestic homes and liturgical designs and was known for his additions and renovations to several churches. He also designed a variety of buildings, including shopping centers, medical clinics, a country club, apartments and land planning projects. He also was involved in the design of a computer building and an aeronautical engineering laboratories. He published four books and numerous research articles and papers.

He was a member of the Sports Car Club of America and Trinity Episcopal Church.

He married Jan Irvine on June 1, 1945, in Dallas. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Thomas Scott Jr., Stillwater, Okla.; a brother, Richard, Irving, Tex.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A daughter, Tamaria Dean, died in 1968, and a son, Dixon Lee, died in 1976.
