Vinland gears up for supper, fair

The Vinland Fair Whole-Hog Sausage and Pancake Supper will be from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Vinland Fairgrounds.

Last year, about 400 attended the event.

The supper benefits the 95th annual Vinland Fair, which is scheduled for Aug. 8, 9 and 10. Ticket prices are $3.50 to $4 for adults; $3 for the meatless meal; and $1 for children 5 and younger.

The fairgrounds are located about 10 miles southeast of Lawrence and five miles north of Baldwin. From Lawrence, drive about nine miles south on County Road 1055 (Haskell Avenue) to County Road 460, then east about a half mile, where signs will indicate the supper site.

Local company, KU Med to receive federal grants

Edge Enterprises Inc., Lawrence, and Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., each will receive a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Edge Enterprises will be awarded $100,000 for its Multimedia Teacher Training for Community program through the department’s Small Business Innovation Research Grant program.

The funds will enable Edge Enterprises to develop interactive media to show teachers how to foster respect and tolerance among students in the classroom.

KU Med Center will receive $506,000 through the department’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for its research project studying how the brain repairs itself after a stroke.

The Old Guard Assn.seeks new members

Members of the U.S. Army’s oldest infantry regiment are seeking former soldiers to join The Old Guard Assn.

Current and former members of the 3rd U.S. Infantry, also known as “The Old Guard,” formed the association five years ago. Membership is open to all soldiers who have served at any time in any battalions of the regiment.

The organization has had four annual reunions. Plans are in the works for the fifth reunion, to be in September at Fort Myer, Va.

The regiment is the Army’s official ceremonial unit and escort to the president.
