Lawrence’s Kmart store to remain open; distribution center, employees await review

Lawrence’s Kmart store was not among the 284 stores slated for closure by the bankrupt retailer Friday, but the approximately 430 employees at the company’s Lawrence distribution center could be affected in future weeks.

Friday’s announcement did not include job cuts at any of Kmart’s distribution centers, but company spokeswoman Mary Lorencz said the retailer will conduct a review of its distribution system in the “next several weeks.”

“Obviously our distribution system will have to be reviewed,” Lorencz said. “But at this point we’re not speculating on how it may be impacted.”

The Kmart Distribution Center, 2400 Kresge Road, is one of the community’s 10 largest private employers.

The company’s Lawrence store, at 31st and Iowa streets, was not slated for closure. Only two Kmarts will be closed in Kansas. They are located in Topeka, which has two stores, and Newton.
