KC nips Tigers

? For Mike Sweeney, it must have been sweet even if it was only an exhibition game.

Sweeney hit a home run off Detroit’s Jeff Weaver in the second inning, and Kansas City beat Detroit, 2-1, Thursday in a matchup including the main players from one of last season’s more spectacular brawls. Sweeney drew a 10-game suspension and his first career ejection after a bench-clearing fight Aug. 10 in Kansas City.

Sweeney, a devout Christian, said he went after Weaver and threw him to the ground after Weaver allegedly called Sweeney a profane name.

On Thursday, Sweeney hit Weaver’s first pitch over the left-field fence to start the second inning.

Weaver got some revenge in the fourth, striking out Sweeney on a breaking pitch.
