s Tournament: Jayhawks draw Texas

Kansas University’s women’s basketball team ended its regular season with a loss to Texas.

On Tuesday, the Jayhawks will try to prevent the Longhorns from ending their season.

Twelfth-seeded Kansas (5-24) will play No. 5 seed UT (19-8) at 2:30 p.m. at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo., in the first round of the Big 12 Conference Tournament. Texas defeated the Jayhawks, 61-46, on Feb. 26 at Allen Fieldhouse. Kansas was within two points at halftime before being blown out in the second half.

KU had won four in a row in the series, but this has been a nightmare season for the Jayhawks. Kansas became the first team to finish 0-16 in the brief history of the powerhouse league, which finished the regular season with seven teams ranked in the top 25.

“This was a tough year to have to rebuild,” said KU coach Marian Washington, who has endured consecutive losing seasons for the first time since 1982-83 and 1983-84. “It seemed like every game we were playing a nationally ranked team.”

The winner of Tuesday’s game will face fourth-seeded and 14th-ranked Kansas State (23-6) at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Wildcats have a first-round bye along with No. 1 seed Oklahoma (24-3), No. 2 Baylor (24-4) and No. 3 Colorado (21-8).

Other first-round pairings match No. 8 seed Oklahoma State (15-14) vs. No. 9 Texas A&M (13-15), No. 7 Texas Tech (17-10) vs. No. 10 Missouri (14-13) and No. 6 Iowa State (21-7) vs. No. 11 Nebraska (14-15).
