Collison gets back at Antlers

Nick Collison isn’t a huge fan of Missouri’s student cheering section, The Antlers.

“Those fans are vicious,” Collison said after scoring a career-high 28 points in Kansas’ 95-92 victory over MU at Hearnes Center.

“They had a sign about coach (Roy) Williams’ mother, who has passed away. That gets you upset and builds inside and at the end you just let loose.”

So Collison, who fumed after reading a sign that read, “For a good time, call Roy’s mother,” tugged at his jersey momentarily and grinned while looking up at the Antlers while jogging to the locker room after the game. A couple of other Jayhawks also pulled at the ‘Kansas’ on their jerseys while looking into the crowd.

Williams’ mother died of cancer several years ago.

The Antlers also had a sign concerning the private parts of Collison and Jeff Boschee.

And they had the obligatory sign listing Drew Gooden’s campus phone number.

“It’s a great crowd, but a little more mouthy and dirty than other crowds,” Collison said.

After the game, one reporter heard some MU fans  not the Antlers  cussing at Jayhawk players and coaches as they headed through the tunnel to their locker room. One fan was seen tossing an empty cup at a group of Jayhawks, including Brett Ballard.

Williams was escorted off the court by police as several fans shouted insults.

The Antlers, as they sometimes do, showed up at KU’s hotel on Saturday night.

“They were there when we got off the bus, but the security guard shoved them out of there real fast,” KU’s Jeff Carey said.

Williams, of course, was happy to snap a two-game losing streak at MU. He’s 6-8 all-time at Hearnes.

“The best thing about winning here is I don’t have to answer all those questions,” he said of having trouble winning at MU. “I’ve said a hundred or however many times we’ve been here and lost is because Missouri is really good.

“I don’t know if I’ll ever enjoy the 16-0 part. We know some other things are coming up quickly,” he added, referring to the Big 12 tournament and NCAAs. “I will enjoy the conference championship more than 16-0.”

Â

Back pain: KU freshman Keith Langford, who scored 14 points in 29 minutes, stretched his back at various times on the sidelines.

He came down hard on his right foot, feeling a twinge in his back in the first half. He needed to stretch to loosen his back muscles.

“I’ll take some pills, get some treatment. It’s sore right now,” he said.

Â

Milestone: Kirk Hinrich scored his 1,000th point on a layup with just under eight minutes left in the first half. He is the third player this season to reach 1,000 points.

“It’s an accomplishment. I’m happy to do it. I knew I only needed a few points so I figured I’d get it,” said Hinrich, who scored 25 points. He had scored 16 points combined on 6-of-18 shooting in two previous games at MU.

Stats, facts: KU is the first team in Big 12 history to go unbeaten in league play. Â KU is 16-0 in league play for the first time since the 1922-23 team went 16-0 in the Missouri Valley. Â Gooden hit five of 17 shots for a season-low 29.4 percent.
