Mayflower replica to sail

Providence, R.I. (ap) Â A replica of the Mayflower will visit Rhode Island this summer to help the nation’s smallest state celebrate Independence Day.

The Mayflower II will sail from Massachusetts’ Plimoth Plantation to Newport and then to Providence.

The ship is slated to arrive in the city on June 30. Visitors will be able to tour the ship and speak with the crew, who will describe the conditions of the harsh voyage.

The Mayflower II was built as a gift from Great Britain to the United States. The Rhode Island voyage will be the sixth trip the ship has taken since its trans-Atlantic voyage in 1957.

Biosphere 2 offers tours

Tucson, Ariz. (ap) Â For the first time since the $150 million structure was built more than a decade ago, the Biosphere 2 Center is offering a tour that allows visitors to experience the different ecosystems in the laboratory from inside.

The guided tour takes about an hour.

Ecosystems include upper savanna, lower savanna, a coastal mangrove, a subtropical thornscrub area and a coastal fog desert. There is also a 3.15-acre glass-enclosed greenhouse.

Visitors also get a glimpse of the Biosphere’s guts, a series of massive air conditioners, pipes and instruments with dials and valves.
