World Online report – Winter storm on the way

If you don’t like winter weather, this may be the weekend to leave town. Cold temperatures and a mix of rain and sleet changing to snow are expected Friday night.

And there could be as much as 5 inches of snow on the ground by Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka, which has issued a winter weather advisory for the Lawrence area.

The forecast calls for occasional rain mixed with sleet, with temperatures falling to about 30 Friday evening. Winds will be blustery, 15 to 25 mph from the northeast.

The rain and sleet are expected to change to snow by late Friday evening, with snowfall heavy at times.

Total accumulation of 2 to 5 inches is possible, with drifting conditions and temperatures dropping into the mid-teens.

Saturday will be mostly cloudy, with a 40 percent chance of snow in the morning. It will be much colder and blustery, with blowing and drifting snow. Highs will be in the lower 20s, with north winds 15 to 25 mph.

Temperatures will drop to near 6 degrees Saturday night.
